Beer 3: *OCTOBER SPECIAL* (?)

Hello again!

Welcome back to the Craft Beer Conversational. I ended the previous blog on a bit of cliff-hanger if you would consider it that. I mentioned that this blog entry’s featured beer was an ‘October Special’. You may have been thinking along the lines of an Oktoberfest-related beer such as a Bavarian Märzen or a Münchner Weißbier (not necessarily craft beers, I know), both quality beer styles, however, you would be wrong.

As a Sober October Special, I have a non-alcoholic beer!... I know. Daniel Jack drinking a non-alcoholic beer?! Unheard of. Mum, if you’re reading, you can get back on the chair after falling off it. I actually took part in this year’s Sober October efforts… for 21 hours, then failed miserably. It was a tough shift, OK?

The beer I have on this Sober Saturday is Brew Dog’s ‘Nanny State’. It’s 0.5% ABV, so technically a low alcohol beer. The naming of this one was Brew Dog’s response to the media blaming their 16.5% Tokyo Imperial Stout and other strong beers for irresponsible drinking. Brew Dog are also known for their high-publicity controversies, such as their ‘Pink IPA for girls’, the owners posing as sex workers in windows and 55% (yes, 55%) beer bottles sold in dead animals’ taxidermied bodies, which essentially results in loads of people raging/ shouting about it, therefor free promo. They’re not silly.

Anyways, onto the tasting.

I must firstly say, I’m a huge fan of the brew dog range, particularly the Punk IPA and the Elvis Juice Grapefruit IPA, however, this one just didn’t cut it for me.

Brew Dog Nanny State
Appearance: Amber/toffee colour

Aroma: Piney, tropical, malty & hoppy (actually pretty decent)

Taste: This is where it falls down. There’s definitely something missing. It lacks body and is watery, with a very (almost too) bitter aftertaste. A confusing one.

Rating: 2.9/5* (ratebeer.com) – I disagree.

Other comments: OK, I didn’t think it was amazing but considering your options if you’re the designated driver, it’s not the end of the world. Also, £4 for 4 cans in ASDA?! I thought non-alcoholic beers were supposed to be significantly cheaper than their alcoholic counterparts. That’s 4 quid I’ll never see back.

I’ve tried Becks Blue and the Budweiser Prohibition lager in the past, so you don’t have to, so please don’t. They’re poor. (I guess that’s three beers rated in this one).

Designated Driver

So in conclusion, don’t be the designated driver. Thanks for reading. Got a belter of a beer lined up for the next blog, so hit subscribe & keep an eye out.

Cheers,

Dan
