Beer 4: Disco Fork Lift Truck

Yeah, what a name for a beer...

There's a story behind it, however, as I'll explain further down.

Disco Fork Lift Truck is The Drygate Brewery's Mango-infused American Pale Ale. As described by them aptly as;

"MANGO FANDANGO! JUICY PALE ALE LOADED TO THE GUNNELS WITH U.S HOPS AND MANGO. SWEET MALT WITH SOFT BITTER UNDERTONES"

This one is something special. I actually came across it when taking the Drygate Brewery tour (highly recommended by the way) with my good friend Robbie. We're both beer geeks, so where better to spend a Sunday afternoon than there. Situated less than 10 minutes walk east from Glasgow's George Square and just around the corner from the Tennents factory (Oh no, I said the 'T' word on a craft beer blog) the brewhouse bar is the ideal setting for the 'behind the glass' tour.

For £10, you receive a very informative talk from one of Drygate's 'beer advocates'. Super interesting stuff if you have any interest in beer and the brewing process, especially that of slightly unconventional beers, such as these:

I remember the story of the 'Orinoco Breakfast Stout'. (Far right, above). The name refers to the strong coffee notes and aromas in the beer. Drygate secured a huge deal with the major retailers, however, once thousands of cans had been delivered and stocked, the Scottish Government decided that the name encouraged drinking alcohol in the morning, so all stock was to be removed and destroyed. Really?

The super interesting brewery tour if concluded with four 1/3 pint tasters of all sorts of weird and wonderful beers. Great value for money & highly recommended. We actually got a couple extras as we were the only ones in that day (Shh.)

The one that grabbed our attention was the Disco Fork Lift Truck, and this is why.

Tasting notes

Drygate Brewery tour
Tasting session beers
Appearance: Slightly cloudy & light

Aroma: Bright and punchy fruit scents, complemented by rich hops

Taste: Intense mango notes, super sweet, fruity & hoppy

Comments: A really refreshing fruit-infused beer. To some, it's sacrilege. To me, oaft.

Rating: 3.4/5 on ratebeer.com

P.S When checking the rating I came across this comment and had a giggle. It seems not everyone is keen on adding fruit flavours to beer.

"Putting mango in a hoppy beer feels superfluous like putting Parmesan on cheese on toast, except not that good"

So, what's the story behind the name?

APPARENTLY, the reverse warning tone (you know, the really annoying, loud beeping sound) on Drygate's forklift had broken, so the forklift driver installed a boombox and whenever the forklift was moving, he would blast out the disco tunes, 'cause safety first, right?

Thanks for checking out the fourth of this five-part blog series. As always, drop a comment with your thoughts and let's make this conversational.

Keep an eye out for the final beer of this series, out some time next week.

Cheers

Dan
